Since before I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism a year and a half ago, I have had problems with constipation. NOTHING worked well for it except for Senna tea until I started eating flax seed in my oatmeal every day. Flax seed also has phyto-estrogen in it, so it's been helping me to stay more emotionally balanced as well.
I was already taking 2 or 3 organic flax seed oil capsules, but wasn't getting the results I was hoping for until I started eating the flax seed daily as well. If one isn't used to a lot of fiber, one should start at a smaller amount of flax seeds. I would recommend 1 to 3 teaspoons at first. Otherwise one can get too much of a laxative effect. I was so used to fiber already that I started with 2 tablespoons per day and didn't have any problem at all. After a few days, I added another tablespoon, and haven't had to up that amount at all yet.
Flax seeds are perfect for cleansing one's intestines and bowel as well and keeping them that way, so I'm planning on eating them daily for as long as possible. Now i know why my Grandmother used to put them on her oatmeal daily. Thanks Gram for giving me the great idea! ;D
