I have never heard of charcoal being associated with evil, but I have heard of sulphur being the smell that certain types of evil spirits emit. I have dealt with this type of evil spirit myself, and when they are present, the smell of sulpher accompanies them. It smells like someone just put out a match. It is very strange.

About charcoal: as far as I understand, it's associated with Saturn. The reason is in it's colour and in it's absorption ability.
